Art exhibition opening 03 May, 2017 – 6:30 PM
Opening for the exhibition “Catherine Cabaniss: Palimpsests” that introduces two series of works evolving around ancient palimpsests, parchment on which the writing has been erased by monks to create space for new text when often the old text still shows through. The artist has used cultural and social references from her travels and encounters in Ireland and the Czech Republic, such as old Irish poems or grave stones from the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague. Her use of modern materials and techniques reveals historical symbols and stories to the contemporary viewer.
Catherine Cabaniss is a visual artist who creates primarily oil landscape paintings and various graphic arts. Her works are represented in the collections of New Britain Museum of American Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Birmingham Museum of Art, National Gallery in Prague, and Mobile Museum of Art.
