On 5 April 2017 the launch of the new Václav Havel European Academy was officially announced during a press conference in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Its founders are Peter von Kohl, Tom Høyem, Rebecca Harms, Elmar Brok and the European Movement Internationals President Jo Leinen, who will be functioning as the Vice President of the Academy. The launch ceremony took place at the Council of Europe on 4 April 2017.

The academy was founded to offer a platform for interested citizens from all over Europe to learn about the core of European integration and the value of European unity for peace and progress on our continent. Besides courses offered such as “Europe right now”, “Geo-politics” or “Demographic challenges”, the academy will also organise lectures, music events, sports and art performances – depending on the theme of the week.

Named after European human rights activist Václav Havel, the academy will foster a common understanding through the exchange of ideas (on the future of Europe) among participants from different countries.
