HAPPY HAVEL DAY!

Mayor Bill de Blasio to Declare September 28 Vaclav Havel Day in New York City

Join us for a celebration of the power of words and human rights at the inaugural Havel Day in New York City. The program will be hosted by screenwriter and human rights activist Margaret Nagle, winner of three Writers Guild of America Awards. Professor Timothy Garton Ash of Oxford University will present the first Disturbing the Peace Award for a Courageous Writer at Risk. Dagmar Havlova, spouse of Vaclav Havel, and Adriana Krnacova, Mayor of Prague, will be the guests of honor. Jan Hamacek, Speaker of the House of the Czech Republic, and Penny Abeywardena, Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, will offer remarks.

VHLF_4_1600x100The evening will feature performances of the plays Catastrophe, dedicated to the then-jailed Havel by Samuel Beckett, and Mistake, written by Havel in homage to Beckett, starring Kathleen Chalfant and David Strathairn and directed by Michael Sexton, Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Society. There will also be music by Michael Kocab, Ondrej Pivec and gospel singers. Reception in advance of the celebration at Bohemian Spirit Restaurant and after-party at the Ballroom Bar!
